OASNON.COM UPDATES!!!
August 18, 2008

Oas Micro-Finance Project is very much alive. Plans are being finalized and will be implemented soon. Watch out for its launching date.
As we all know, our Oasnon-English Dictionary Project, Phase I, is coming to an end. The Phase I involves “recording” known and popular words; such words are transcribed in our “working dictionary”. These words are not final but will serve as “layouts” for our final dictionary which will be sanctioned by a “group of lexicographers” probably formed and headed by Abdon Balde, Jr.
In the meantime, we need more words to finalize our Phase I, whose deadline is on September 30, 2008. This means that those who are interested in submitting oasnon words to be considered/incorporated in the Oasnon-English Dictionary, can/may submit before this deadline.
In order to avoid duplicity and extra work, before submitting, please cross-refer that your words are not “pre-listed” in the “working dictionary” or that the definition stated is not wanting nor deficient. Then you may submit your words to the following:
For letters starting A, B, D, K & P - please email attachments to Biep Romano
For letters starting R, S, W, Y, T, & U - please email attachments to Jun Rex
For letters starting L, H, G, I, M, N, & Ng - please email attachments to Larry Fallis
All others starting with letters not aforementioned - pleas contact Biep Romano
Please be part of Oasnon History. We may not be able to trace some etymologies nor its word origin/authors, but for sure, be counted as a contributor of some sort; a contributor to a worthy cause. We sure don’t want Oasnon to be another Latin.

"When He saw the miltitudes, He was moved with compassion for them." -Matthew 9:36
Whenever we testify that God has forgiven us and provided eternal life through faith in Christ, we're declining that God is a saving God. Yet, when we observe destructive lifestyles among people, it's easy to write them off. Instead, we should look at them as Christ does. "When He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them." Jesus said He came not to condemning people, we should say, "Who am I to condemn others, when God has forgiven me so generously?" God delights to use forgiven sinners to reach other sinners.
Love is giving for the world's needs, Love is sharing as the Lord leads, Love is caring when the world cries, Love is compassion with Christlike eyes.
TO LOVE SINNERS IS TO BE LIKE JESUS.

It's been a while since the first time we brought up the possibility of a micro-credit fund for Oas, and as we continue our seemingly endless debate and discussions on ways to make it work, people continue to live in poverty and need, living lives that none of us would likely want nor wish on anyone. While many have shown interest in supporting the project and a few dedicated ones have actually done some work on trying to make it happen, such as Ben R , who selflessly did quite a bit of legwork on his own time and expense- reaching out to people and organizations who know about micro-credit, doing research, etc., (regrettably, Ben has since excused himself for personal reasons), Javier R, Greg C, Redzar, Melvin R, Louella and Chad), the micro-credit fund remains, well, a nice and lofty dream. I think something can be said about Oasnons and our tendency to get all excited about something, make lots of noise about it, only to go pfft (!) and lose steam later. Darn! And we thought we got it nailed.

 Hug and Kiss |
 |
Hug and Kiss by Mrs. Elaine D. Lewis.
I worked as a volunteer for the diocese who helped in the rehabilitiation of new Canadians who came from every part of the world. We were assigned to different tasks according to our skills. I am not a graduate teacher but I seem to have the proper knack plus patience and good articulation, and am able to reach my people with no difficulty.
I was assigned to a class of 32 pupils. Most were of Spanish and Arabic origin. My first class was greeted with a smile where one by one shook hands with me as I said loudly, "Hello, welcome to my class."
Once settle at their desk, I noticed two middle aged men speaking to each other. As I had to establish discipline to prove my position as a teacher, I inquired if there was something wrong. Both looked sheepish and said, "no English me."
I knew that one of these fellows was Arabic and according to his application sheet he had declared that he spoke French. Very well, I thought, then: I'll speak French to ask him if there was a problem.
"Non Madame. Il me dit que vous ne pourez jamais lui faire comprendre ou lui faire parle anglais."

This is a “must know” for everyone (A Forwarded Message from the Asanza Group "A Cool Clan of Oas")
Remember that stuff about hiding under a table or standing in a doorway?? Well, this guy has a completely reverse opinion. This is very interesting, different from what we were all taught.
Boy! Is this ever an eye opener. Directly opposite of what we've been taught over the years! I can remember in school being told to, 'duck and cover' or stand in a doorway during an earthquake. This guy's findings is absolutely amazing. I hope we all remember his survival method if we are ever in an earthquake!! !
Please read this and pass the info along to your family members; it could save their lives someday!

Information: Optimum Strategies for Creativity and Longevity |

dann writes "Optimum Strategies and Longevity By Sing Lin, Ph.D.
Member of National Council of Chinese Institute of Engineers USA/Greater New York Chapter and Member of the Board of Director of National Taiwan University Alumni Association Greater New York
Subj: Longevity Vs. Retirement Age
The pension funds in many large corporations (e.g., Boeing, Lockheed Martin, AT&T, Lucent Technologies, etc.) have been "Over Funded" because many "late retirees" who keep working into their old age and retire late after the age of 65 tend to die within two years after their retirements. In other words, many of these late retirees do not live long enough to collect all their fare shares of pension money such they leave a lot of extra-unused money in the pension funds resulting in the over-funded pension funds.
Dr. Ephrem provided the important results in the following Table 1 and the associated chart from an actuarial study of life span vs. age at retirement. The study was based on the number of pension checks to retirees of Boeing Aerospace.

An incredible love story has come out of China recently and managed to touch the world. It's a story of a man and an older woman who ran off to live and love each other in peace for over half a century. The 70-year-old Chinese man who hand-carved over 6,000 stairs up a mountain for his 80-year-old wife has passed away in the cave which has been the couple's home for the last 50 years.
Over 50 years ago, Liu Guojiang, a 19-year-old boy fell in love with a 29-year-old widowed mother named Xu Chaoqin. In a twist worthy of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, friends and relatives criticized the relationship because of the age difference and the fact that Xu already had children. At that time it was unacceptable and immoral for a young man to love an older woman. To avoid the market gossip and the scorn of their communities, the couple decided to elope and lived in a cave in Jiangjin County in Southern Chong Qing Municipality.
In the beginning, life was harsh, as they had nothing - no electricity or even food. They had to eat grass and roots they found in the mountain, and Liu made a kerosene lamp that they used to light up their lives. Xu felt that she had tied Liu down and repeatedly asked him, "are you regretful? Liu always replied, "as long as we are inudstrious, life will improve."

Opinions: Fresh, Sweet, Seedless Watermelon . . . $2.99 by Rose Bustamante |
 |
The Milliken bus was traveling along Bayview Avenue towards John Street. It had to take a detour because the little bridge on John Street between Bayview Avenue and Henderson has been under repair for months. That was why the bus had to go through Bayview and pass by the Longos Supermarket.
"That's good! Seedless Watermelon for $2.99. I must get one, before I go home." It was the driver of the bus talking that interrupted my thoughts. I just came from the doctor and I was worried about few things.
I was sitting close to the driver. He was kind of directing the conversation towards me. If you use the regional bus regularly you become acquainted with the drivers and become friendly with them.
I have a particular affection for the drivers in this route. I know most of them and I believe they also know me. They are very caring and they always put the platform down when I get on or off the bus.
The driver who remarked about the watermelon advertized in front of Longos Supermarket is one of the most friendly. He always had something nice to say when I board the bus. It could just be about the weather but his comments reveal the bright outlook of this man. No matter how bad the winter day was, he would have something positive to add like "We can't really complain, you know. We are luckier, we did not get the tsunami."
He continued talking about the watermelon. "With my three boys and my wife - we can finish that watermelon. We will just sit at the backyard on a glorious day like this. I bet my wife got some hamburgers and sausage for the barbeque."
